Purchase Ruckus zonedirector second hand

I have basically 2 questions regarding purchasing a second hand zonedirector (1200).

- Can the hardware be registered to myself, instead of the original  buyer? (I know I can register the S/N via my own ruckus account but I want to know if the ownership of the device can be transferred to me? 

- Is it possible to buy a support contract for a second hand zonedirector 1200? Or even Zoneflex R500 AP for that matter?

I'll "me too" this one - we often find customers that simply can't buy new and are more than happy with older, sometimes prior-gen enterprise gear as opposed to brand new consumer junk. Was really hard to get a straight answer on this from a few of the resellers we spoke to.

I'm a home enthusiast with 2 zonedirector 1200 to be redundant. :-) I don't understand why this seems to be so difficult as I also have hit a wall asking ruckus about this.

Needless to say, like many other people, I freelance in IT and having affordable lab equipment at home is a big plus. It also steers my purchasing recommendations - if a vendor makes it easy for me to learn and deploy their gear, they end up getting more recommended.

To be fair, the whole licensing process is screwy.  We bought a ZD1200 and a dozen APs a few weeks back.  The extra AP licenses took OVER A WEEK to be processed by Ruckus, causing us to miss a few deadlines.  We had all the equipment and we were just waiting on some guy in a cubicle to "approve" licenses we already paid for.  All new equipment, just to be clear.  I'm told by our reseller and an Arris rep that long turnarounds on releasing licenses that are paid for is common.

Thankfully it is easier to get a temp AP activation , so you can at least deploy whilst the guy in cubicle hovers his mouse over the approve button.It can be embarrasing at times when the customer is looking at you slightly worried.

Please schedule receipt of your equipment and licenses ahead of your installations,
especially if you need additional APs to the number supported by the model of ZD.
I'm sorry Bway's update took a week.

If you're considering buying used equipment, ask for the Serial Number.  Call/Chat
with Ruckus support  https://support.ruckuswireless.com/contact-us and be sure thedevice wasn't RMA'd by an original owner, but never returned...!  Warning: eBay has many of these.  
You cannot register controllers or APs that were previously RMA'd but not returned,nor purchase further Support contracts.That said, there are plenty of ZD1000/7962, ZD1100/7363/7982 deployments still
running happily on the 9.3.4.0.21 and 9.10.2.0.53 releases respectively, that are stillunder an RTF (return-to-factory, you pay shipping to/we pay shipping back) return policy.BTW Sander, ZD1200 is still on the long term support roadmap, vs the EOL model ZD1000/1100 that I mentioned.

I'll look up your serial numbers.  I'm not sure how the transfer is handled, but should be doable in the system.

Hi Michael,

Wonder if you can help - I just had a chat with the support link you posted above and the guy there said ruckus would not issue new licences for second hand kit. I was looking at a zd1100 with six ap licences that I want to upgrade to ten licences. Is this possible? Will ruckus sell more licences for second hand kit like this? The ZD is coming from an IT refurbisher taken from a school I think.

Sorry, we do not warranty/license any "second hand" equipment, only hardware sold directly from a Ruckus reseller.
Too often, the "second hand" equipment was reported faulty, and replaced with new thru an RMA.  Therefore, previous S/N equipment is not supported (was supposed to have been returned/destroyed).
I'd ask for your money back, and buy Ruckus equipment from an authorized reseller (which will come with warranty/licensing).

I've not bought the zd1100 yet, I have some 7321 APs that I've been using as great standalone APs and wanted to see how they fit together with a ZD and had the offer of a cheap zd1100. I'm not after warranty or support, just licences to be able to run all my 7321s from the ZD. I'd read elsewhere that others had had ownership of equipment transferred to them but not seen anything about purchasing additional AP licenses as a one off.
It's really for my own use as a Wi-Fi lab to get familiar with the kit so I can't really justify spending on new equipment ATM.

Hm, I'm afraid you won't be able to purchase more licenses.  And although our ZD1100 went End of Sale in 2015, if you find one from a "trustworthy" source,

(since I made my official statement above), if it has as many licenses as needed (base was only 6 APs), we *do* provide the last/latest firmware without support.

Thanks for that info.
Shame about not being able to purchase more licences but I guess that's to be expected given the ZD1100/1200 are eol.

At least I am able to make an "informed" decision now. I appreciate the "risks" associated with 2nd hand kit but this endeavour is more for "education" and self research than for a reliable installation. From a freelance IT perspective it appears to be quite difficult getting access to a product to familiarise oneself with it before recommending/installing such. More of a catch 22 than I anticipated but I'm hoping this opportunity works out. Not used ruckus before but so far I like it.

I'd like to add that we use ruckus in our company. I got familair with the product and came to like how it works and how reliable it is. So when I moved to a new house I purchased a zonedirector 1200 with 3 R500 antenna's for each floor. Of course the zonedirector was second hand and the antenna's were new but probably not from a preferred reseller. So for us home enthusiasts, who can't afford buying new hardware, I feel a bit let down to be honest. Since wifi is very important with kids growing up nowadays I also added a second zonedirector 1200 to be reduntant. It would be rewarding that ruckus would support us home users with access to firmware updates after the support contract ends on the hardware right? Could I send you my serial numbers Michael? :-)
