Hi jfschneid,

You can use a 2942 in a stand alone mode without a ZoneDirector. It runs in bridge mode, so no NAT function is provided by the 2942, and you will need a DHCP server, if you want the IP addresses to be automatically assigned to your wireless clients.

If you want to deploy 2942s in wireless mesh set up, you will need a ZoneDirector.

Kind Regards,

Do you need a zone director to run these or can they operate independently? I am trying to set up seemless wireless through out a 3 floor, 10,000 sq/ft house. What would you suggest?

Which version of ZoneDirector software are you running? Have you looked at the event log on the ZD with wireless clients MAC filter to see what was going on?

Thanks Zoran, but it was not that simple. I ended up following csannedhi’s advice and contacting my supplier, who in turn got me in touch with a Ruckus support tech in Hong Kong, who talked me through changing the country code via Telnet, after I had flashed another firmware. :)

Starkey, is you AP managed via ZoneDiroctor? If yes, hard reset your AP, plug in with your PC via Cat5 (network cable), log in to AP (defaulty IP should be 192.168.0.1) and then you should be able to change any settings.
I’m in AUS and did get the Ruckus gear from US, and did not have problems to change the settings.

Regards
Random AP restarts replied by jmartin95 @ Mon, 11 Aug 2008 19:30:30 -0000

I have a client that purchased a 2942 system with 4 Ruckus 2942 Multimedia Hotzone Wireless AP.

The problem that I am having is that occasionally all 4 of the AP’s will restart. The uptime on the director hardware does not show any change, but the uptime on all 4 of the AP’s will show how ever many corrosponding hours it has been since the client lost wireless access.

Am i missing some kind of scheduled restart setting…or something that may be causing them to restart?

all of the AP’s are connected via PoE…all of the PoE adapters are plugged in to the same battery backup as the director hardware.

any suggestions are appreciated.

How do you setup WDS from the CLI? This is a simple two radio setup and ZoneDirector would be definite overkill.

If it isn’t possible to setup WDS, how about a two radio mesh? These radios are great and I normally set them up by running wires, but I have a situation where WDS or Mesh would work be better.

If you are in US, you will get an AP with that particular country type. US customers are not allowed to change the country code because of FCC regulations.

If you are in AU, you should check with your store to find out how you received a unit with US country settings.

ZF2942 PPPoE configuration replied by rvanzijl @ Mon, 28 Jan 2008 13:12:41 -0000

barkbark, what is the firmware version running on the 2942? Select Status—> Device and copy&paste the info in your reply.

There is no built-in DHCP functionality inside the 2942. Your ISP needs to supply the IP address(es) to your local clients. When you are using the DSL modem, it is then configured in some sort of pass-thru mode and the ISPs IP address is assigned to your Windows client. When using the 2942, the ISPs IP address is assigned to Ethernet side of the 2942 and is therefore NOT passed onto your wireless client. It is common for ISPs to only assign 1 IP address to Home users, so although your Windows DHCP request may reach the ISP, they will not hand out another IP address.

The 2942 was designed for the Hot Spot market (to be installed by W-ISPs) and/or to be used in combination with our ZoneFlex/ZoneDirector productline. In your setup it would be better to use our 2825 AccessPoint (http://www.ruckuswireless.com/products/mediafle…).

Hello, I’m having trouble configuring my 2942 to work with PPPoE.
I have a DSL modem, when plugging this directly to my computer I can receive my external IP address by creating/using a PPPoE connection under Windows Network Connections.
Anyway, by using the PPPoE option in the 2942 configuration I managed to get it connected (seeing it getting an external IP by using a second network cable), but when I try to connect to the device by WLAN all I get is “Waiting for network…” until timing out. The laptop can find the wireless SSID’s, but can’t connect. I tried some different IP settings on the client card to see if it would help but to no avail. I’m not running any encryption as for now, what am I missing? :]

Connect ZF2942AP with DHCP replied by support @ Mon, 10 Dec 2007 17:32:53 -0000

Hi,

Both ZD1006 and ZF2942AP obtain it’s IP address from an external DHCP server and doesn’t provide DHCP server functionality. If your computer supports UPnP you should see their icons from your Network Places Window. If no DHCP offer was received, the default IP address of ZD1006 is 192.168.0.2 and that of ZF2942 is 192.168.0.1.
