Zonedirector controller Redundancy replied by rvanzijl @ Mon, 29 Dec 2008 11:15:04 -0000

Michael, These are currently the available redundancy options:

1. Power up both ZDs and all APs and:
1a. Disable Auto AP Approval. APs will report themselves to both ZDs. The Admin manually approves some of the APs on ZD1 and the remaining APs on ZD2. After all APs have joined either ZD, enable Auto AP Approval on both ZDs so that if one of the ZDs fails the other ZD will take over immediately. Alternatively leave Auto AP Approval disabled which then requires the Admin to allow (some of) the ‘orphan’ APs to join the other ZD in case one of the ZDs fails.
1b. Enable Auto AP Approval. APs will report themselves to the ZD with the lowest amount of joined APs, so the load is spread evenly across the ZDs.

2. In an active-standby scenario you need to manually keep the configuration of the standby ZD synchronized with the active ZD. The Configuration Restore function allows you to choose which configuration options you want to restore (everything, everything except system name and IP address, only configuration about WLANs, Access Controls, Roles and Users). During network installation keep the standby ZD disconnected from the network and once all APs have joined the active ZD, connect the standby ZD and enable Auto AP Approval. If the active ZD fails, the standby ZD will take over.

AD Authentication replied by rvanzijl @ Wed, 24 Dec 2008 09:39:41 -0000

LeeC, AD auth is only available when Captive Portal (aka Web Auth) is enabled on the WLAN. You may need to disable and re-enable Captive Portal (by ticking the box under the WLAN config). With Guest Access enabled we only support Local Database. When selecting 802.1x EAP you can only select a Radius server configured on the ZD. AD and 802.1x is not supported. See the ZD Help option for more info.

LeeC, on a per SSID/WLAN you can place wireless users in seperate VLANs, using the VLAN tag as specified under the Advanced WLAN options (click on the + sign at the bottom of the WLAN config). If your wired infrastructure supports VLAN tags you can seperate the wireless user traffic into multiple VLANs and have 1 DHCP server in each VLAN. If stations from different VLANs need to talk to each other you need to place a router in between the VLANs.

My Aps are trying to get to one of my Domain servers on port 32781 every 30secs or so. They are in a seperate subnet to the domain.
Server is AD and secondary dns and is also the configured radius server which the zonedirector checks against.Radius is working ok but this traffic is from the access points anyway.
Do I need to open my firewall, what is it please?

Currently I’m investigating the usage/deployment possibilites of a network based on a zonedirector 3000 and about 20 AP’s. However I have some specific questions which are:
- Is it possible to wifi enable/disable users at any moment (will they be instantly disconnected)
- Is it possible to interface a zonedirector to a custom application that enables us to make a simple user enable/disable decision based on time

Thx

QoS Handling replied by rvanzijl @ Fri, 12 Sep 2008 06:34:43 -0000

philr, we preserve the DiffServ marking througout the Mesh and we prioritize traffic based on the ToS bits. If the ToS bits are not set we inspect the traffic and may recognize Voice or Video traffic (based on traffic patterns) and will prioritize the traffic accordingly.

When you say ‘all traffic coming out of the APs is not marked’, do you mean to say that ToS/DiffServ marked wireless traffic egresses the APs Ethernet port as unmarked? Do you have packet captures to ‘proof’ this?

Perhaps it is easier to continue this conversation by email. Please send your contact details to support@ruckuswireless.com. We will update this forum when necessary.

Hi,

Can someone tell me more information on the QoS used in Smartmesh?

My understanding is within the Mesh, the traffic is prioritised automagically. Is this influenced by DSCP? Is there any talk of being able to set the DSCP by the APs?

Currently all traffic coming out of the APs are not marked in any way and so are treated as best effort on the LAN. Are we expected to prioritise the traffic ourselves on the LAN?

Find rogues on Map View replied by rvanzijl @ Sun, 31 Aug 2008 16:47:57 -0000

sxfo, first of all, the ZD is not aware of the orientation of the APs. The icon (graphics) is always the same for each type of AP. However, you can rotate the map. Have you tried that? In the top-right corner of Monitor —> Map View you will find a green rotating arrow. Click on it and the mouse pointer will change. Now drag the mouse across the screen.

Sometimes it may be necessary to temporarily remove the APs from the map, then rotate the map and place the APs back. To remove an AP, click on the red cross in the top-right corner (not the one to close down your browser!). Your mouse pointer will change. Now click on an AP and it will move to the left side (marked with a ‘?’). After rotating the drawing, pick&place the APs on the map.

I got a map of the facility and converted all three floors to JPG, then read them into ZD. I then added the APs to the map. When I look for the rogue devices, it seems that they are 180 degrees off (in the ones that I’ve been able to track down. Is there any way to turn the APs on the map so that the rogues are displayed in the correct location?

I’ve got it working with 7942.

pkp, the ZD ports will automatically inherit the VLAN/IP configured through the WLAN configuration. Select Configure—> WLANs, edit one of the existing WLANs, open the Advanced Options at the bottom. If you do NOT configure any VLANs, all wireless user traffic will exit the ZD untagged on the (native) VLAN the ZD is connected to.

Long story short, you cannot configure one port of the ZD to belong to only one VLAN, but perhaps there is a trick you can use: create a new SSID, call it eg AdminAccess (you can make it hidden), configure authentication/encryption so only you can connect to it, configure the VLAN tag in the Advanced Options, leave the other SSIDs as they are today, connect one of the ZD ports to a switch which supports VLAN tagging and connect your Remote Access device to that switch (or configure VLAN tagging on the Remote Access device). Be aware wireless user traffic on the other SSIDs will also exit the port connecting to the Remote Access device.

I have a ZD1006 that I need to use inside a “192.168.x.x” subnet but I want to be able to remotely connect to it for support. Is there any provision to have one of the ZD1006 ports connect to the “192” subnet and have the second port connect to a private IP for admin access only?
