Adriaan, the wireless clients connecting to the LMG and wired clients connecting to the LMG’s Ethernet port are “on the same side”. The product was designed to forward all the user traffic wirelessly to the upstream AP. What you are trying to do is this:

AP))) ((([up]LMG1[down]))) (((Clients
.................|
................LMG2[down]))) (((Clients

As you can see, LMG2 has no upstream (wireless) connection. I beleive it will be easier to connect a standard 2925 (not the LMG flavor) to the wired port of LMG1. Be aware this is all experimental and is certainly not a standard recommendation. We will be releasing our Full Mesh implementation in the near future which allows multiple hops between the wired AP and the Mesh APs. My advice is to wait for that.

Adriaan, the LMG will only connect to a wired AP, so an LMG will not connect to another LMG. In other words, we only support one (1) hop with Lite Mesh.

hi!

I see that the my ruckus ap has 5 ports at the back. When i check my vlan settings, there is a green tick on all ports and wireless ssids and all ssids have a vlan Id of 1.

Now from what i understand all ports and all ssids are in the same lan?

So i went ahead an connected a multicast video streaming server to port 1 but i could not receive any multicast traffic on my listeners on the wireless side.

Then i connected one of the laptops on the wireless and multicasted from it. this worked fine. I could receive it on the wireless listeners and also wired listeners.

So my question is. why cany i sent multicast from the wired source.

Non-Ruckus AP replied by rvanzijl @ Fri, 30 Nov 2007 08:57:11 -0000

Jon, have a look at this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wireless_Distribut…

The short story is that WDS uses a so called 4-MAC address scheme. On the wireless connection between the LMG and the non-Ruckus AP, there is traffic between the 2 MAC addresses of these wireless devices, but there is also traffic between the 2 MAC addresses of the wired source and destination devices. These wired MAC addresses are in the packets through the air.

Wireless devices not supporting WDS will clone the MAC address of the wired source and use that through the air. The recveiving wireless device will ‘think’ it is talking directly to this device, while it is in fact the MAC of the wired device behind the wireless device.

As you can see on the above website, some Motorola APs support WDS, but be aware there is NO standard for WDS today, every vendor may have its own proprietary solution.

The Lite Mesh Gateway was designed to work in concert with Ruckus ZoneFlex APs. Technically, it might also associate with other APs, but only if they support WDS. However, not all features might be available and performance might vary.

I would have a look at our MetroFlex 2211 product: http://www.ruckuswireless.com/products/metroflex/

This product may be better suited for what you’re trying to achieve. The 2211 does not require WDS support on the Mesh/Outdoors AP.

Hi,

I tried removing security. Good idea, but same problem. Our 2925 is connected via WAN port to port 1 of our switch (tagged). Port 2 of the switch (VLAN 11 untagged) goes to our router / DHCP server. We know the path back to the router for port 2 – VLAN 11 is ok because port 5 of the switch is also VLAN 11 untagged and we can get a DHCP IP on a laptop connect to port 5.

I’m out of ideas. According to Ruckus docs, the configuration we have should work. But … no IPs are issued to wireless clients (with or without security). Signal strength is “excellent”, but no IP. I noticed other people on this forum had similar problems. Did anyone find a solution? Any suggestions on what we might try next? I would appreciate any suggestions.

Wireless client IP via DHCP replied by rvanzijl @ Wed, 12 Sep 2007 16:18:59 -0000

Tara, I’m assuming you have 4.1 installed on the 2925 (see Status—> Device). By default the 4 wired ports on the 2925 are member of the Management VLAN (51). Each of the 4 available Wireless SSIDs belongs to a different VLAN (resp 11, 21, 31 and 41). The WAN port is by default tagged and includes all VLANs. You mentioned any wired station will receive an IP address from your DHCP server, so I am assuming your VLAN switch forwards unknown tagged traffic (read: tagged VLAN 51 traffic) to a default or native VLAN and therefore it can reach the DHCP server on that native VLAN.

Are you using any encryption on the Wireless SSID? If so, just as a test, I would disable encryption temporarily and find out if the wireless clients now get an IP address. If so, then there is a mismatch between the encryption configured on the 2925 and the wireless clients.

Wireless client IP via DHCP replied by Tara @ Wed, 12 Sep 2007 02:28:55 -0000

HI,

Our company is setting up a number of Ruckus ZF2925 APs. I’m new to this device. We keep seeing the same problem.

Wireless clients cannot acquire an IP address from the DHCP server. We can physically connect to a ZF2925 LAN port with a laptop and get an IP address from the backend DHCP server, but wireless clients cannot get an IP. Our configuration is as follows:

ZF2925 (WAN Port) <del>-> Port 1 of VLAN Switch, Port 2 -</del>> DHCP Server / Router

VLAN Switch Port 1 = VLAN 11 tagged, Port 2 = VLAN 11 Untagged

The ZF2925 is configured for a static IP. We are assuming that the “Gateway” entry on the “Internet” setup page must be set to the backend router’s IP. We can physically connect a laptop to a ZF2925 LAN port, get an IP from the DHCP server and setup the ZF2925. We cannot obtain an IP from the DHCP server from a wireless client.

This problem is consistent. If anyone could shed some light on this issue, it would be appreciated. Thank you for your help.

One gateway for multiple SSID replied by csannedhi @ Sat, 25 Aug 2007 00:27:30 -0000

Hi,

If your ZF2925 is running firmware version 4.1.0.96 then the management traffic on the WAN port tagged. Let us say Dept1 connects to SSID Hotspot1 and Dept2 connects to SSID Hotspot2 then the default traffic from these networks will be tagged with VLAN ID 11 and 21 respectively.
You need to configure the switch port to which 2925’s WAN port connects to as Trunk port. You need to have a connection to the DHCP server from this switch in order to assign IP addresses to the wireless clients.

HTH

One gateway for multiple SSID replied by wuti @ Wed, 15 Aug 2007 17:54:01 -0000

If an office needs 2 SSIDs for 2 departments. Each department has its own server. But they are sharing the same Internet gateway.

I try to figure out how to setup the VLAN (group, membership, VID) for above requirement. So far, I can imagine to the switch config as following

Port1 = Server1 (PVID11)
Port2 = Server2 (PVID12)
Port24 = 2925 (PVID1)
Port20 = Router (PVID??)

V11 members = Port1(untag), Port24(tag)
V12 members = Port2(untag), Port24(tag)

If I need port 20 to be reachable from both SSIDs. Does anyone has an idea for what PVID or VLAN I should set to which port ?
