DNS problem with iPhone

When I try to use my iPhone connected to my 2211, it appears that the DNS server settings don’t work. I can’t get anywhere unless I edit the DNS server from the offered 192.168.10.1 (2211 IP address) to a known good external DNS server IP address.

Is there a way to have the DHCP server offer the real DNS server IP instead of having the 2211 proxy the requests?

Hi,

2211 acts like a proxy server for DNS requests (DNS server’s IP address is same as 2211’s IP address when it acts in Route mode). If you want to use a DNS server other than 2211’s IP address you have to manually type in the IP address.

Was hoping to get it to stop acting like a proxy server for DNS. Most routers have the option to pass the actual DNS IP in the DHCP offer. For some reason, the iPhone is not getting along with the proxy. As far as I can tell, there is no way to manual change the DHCP offer on the 2211. Requires a manual entry on the DHCP client which is unfortunate.

On occasion I have had my Mac lose internet connectivity and cycling the radio on the Mac side seems to fix it. I now wonder if it is hiccuping on the DNS proxy as well. Next time I will try getting to an IP directly to see if it is DNS related.

Hi Mike,

Try to change the DNS entries on 2211 by going to Configuration -> System -> DHCP Server -> Domain Name Server Setting and see if the next DHCP Offer contains the configured DNS entries. After you make this change you don’t need to do any manual entry on the DHCP client.

Not sure why you had to power cycle MAC when it loses Internet connectivity.

The DNS in the 2211 shows the IP of the DNS for the wireless provider.

I know this is an old topic but I runned into the same problem with my iPhone. Please note that I’m more a user that looks into useability and easy setup to extend my existing wirless at home.

When I switch on the iPhone I have connection for a minute and only a few pages to download. After that I’m getting the message that the server cannot be reached anymore and I do not have any connection to the Internet. I do not have any problems with my PCs or laptops.

So what is the solution with the 2211 so the iPhone can be used at my home and everywhere at any time ?

Roger
