Hello:

I connect to the city-wide wireless network via the 2211NG >> Belkin router.
I constantly have a very annoying problem.
Every day, there are some urls that get blocked by the Ruckus device.
Typically, google.com would be systematically redirected to the login page of the device.

Even after I login, the url would still be blocked.
And if by any chance, it frees the url, another url would start not working e.g. economist.com
A ping shows it translates www.bockedurl.com as 192.168.1.1 …
In the meantime, ping economist.com translates the url as 216.35.68.215 but times out.
Finally, while having these issues with some few urls, everything else would work fine.
Also the problem remains whether I connect using my wifi card or a my ethernet port.

Could anyone help me fix this very frustating problem?

Thanks,

Kondoo,

When this problem happens did you take a look at connection status on the Status -> Internet page? It is quite possible that the unit failed to get a valid IP address. Because of link failure to city-wide network you are getting redirected to Ruckus login page to check settings.
If the link failure is true you may want to investigate it further. How many signal bars do you see on the device when you have a working connection? If signal is a problem have you tried to move the device closer to the outside mesh access point?

If you have already made a succesfully contact with economist.com your machine knows the IP address of this website. For that reason your ping response show the correct IP address (216.35.68.215) but because of lack of connection it fails. At the sametime if you ping a website that you have not been such as financialtimes.com you will get ping response from 192.168.1.1

Btw, why are you connecting a Belking router to 2211-NG? Is it a wireless router?

Thanks for you reply.

  • As a first update, all problems seem to disappear when I directly connect (via Ethernet) my laptop to the 2211 (shortcutting the Wireless Belkin Router). While trying to fix this, I was also very close to the router.
  • To answer your questions, yes the signal is often strong (3 bars) when these problems occur. I don’t think there was a link failure since some urls would work perfectly while others would not. For example, I was listening to online audio stream and posting on this forum while not being to google anything at all. A few hours later, everything failed …
  • The Belkin is a wireless router thru which the computers in the house connect to the network via the 2211 NG. These problem occur even when I connect to the Belkin via Ethernet and not Wifi.

In a nutshell, I’m a little puzzled by the behavior i.e. frequent irrelevant & uneffective redirections to the login page. Would this have to do with the ISP discouraging home network setups?

Thanks,

K.

If you are using MM2211-NG then should not need a Belkin router. Are you a USI customer? You may not want to place a wireless router right next to MetroFlex unit as they can interfere with each other.
From your response it sounds like -
1. Everything worked perfectly after Belkin is removed. Correct?
2. When it fails every URL fails. You said “everything failed…” above.

Btw, 3 bars is not a good signal strength.

Thank you very much for your reply.

I’m indeed a USI customer. The setup had been in place before I moved in.
I have been having many problems and therefore decided to reach out how to fix this.

I also just read your 2007 post about setting up a wireless network using the Dual Zone function. I realize the interference from the Belkin and 2211. I’ll try to upgrade the firmware and setup a wireless ap.
I hope this will work fine.

I don’t know if the proximity of the Belkin affects the strength of the received signal but I never observed more than 3 bars…
I’ll see if that changes with the Belkin turned off.

Thanks again for your assistance.

K.
