2211 EXT no signal on external antenna replied by jonbruce @ Sat, 29 Nov 2008 17:00:06 -0000

So far from support I’ve received messages that I may return these. This is great and just shows how good Ruckus support is. However I wonder if anyone else has experience with these, I have five units doing the same thing with different external antennae. Has anyone else used the same product had had good results? Did I just get a bad batch?

2211-ext bridge mode no-go replied by pegglegg007 @ Tue, 25 Nov 2008 06:52:35 -0000

Well it seems you’re more knowledgeable than I am about this. I had the older model and had it setup in bridge mode successfully with ports open for utorrent and everything was glorious. Then for some reason my connection slowed to 100-200kb (small b) download speeds for days on end. A tech had to come out and exchange my modem for the 2211-ext. Now when I set it to bridge mode it loses internet connection despite my best efforts to change just about any setting.

In “router” mode I tried opening ports on the 2211 but not sure which “server port” i need to use to make it open them properly. They still appear to be blocked. Wish bridge mode would just work. UGH. curious to know if you ever figure out a solution.

stations can't see each other in dual-zone mode replied by tmander @ Sat, 15 Nov 2008 23:20:59 -0000

I get quite intermitent communication: mostly Apple gear and one TiVo. The AppleTV is pretty unreliable on wireless: it tends to be happier on the wired port. I frequently cannot see services reliably via Bonjour. Using ping and ssh works fine.

I’ve been troubleshooting today with a rebooted 2211-DZ and it seems better, but I’ve had times where I’ve pulled out my hair in frustration. I’m close to moving the device to bridged mode and getting a new access point.

I’m speculating a litle that at the moment, it may be the multicast nature of Bonjour that may be at fault. Apple gear relies on this substantially for AppleTV, iTunes, AirTunes etc.

2211 EXT no signal on external antenna replied by jonbruce @ Wed, 12 Nov 2008 13:37:04 -0000

Hey there,

My situation is this …

- I have an outdoor AP
- I have a building far enough away that the Ruckus works perfectly sitting in the window with it’s internal antenna
- I have an 8dbi antenna on a 40’ TV tower with a short cable run (< 25’ as the Ruckus sits on the 2nd floor)
- If I use a Dlink DWL-2100AP which works well with said external antenna
- I cannot leave the Ruckus in the window as this is a shop where the unit will get destroyed. It needs to sit under a desk (where the signal from the internal antenna is no good)

What happens is the Ruckus 2211 EXT works perfectly on it’s internal antenna (when sitting in the window). However when I plug in the external antenna, and switch to “External Antenna” in the software and the signal drops to nothing.

Is there something I’m missing? Can anything point out any ideas?

2211-ext bridge mode no-go replied by jojocat @ Wed, 29 Oct 2008 20:06:23 -0000

Well, to follow up with the little bit of help I’ve been able to get in case anyone cares to know…
- By design, the mm2211-ng still requests an IP address from the outside (metro) AP even if it’s set to bridge mode. This is different from the previous model that did not request an internal IP when in bridge mode.
- Ruckus claims to have tested against the BelAir equipment successfully

That’s about all I got. I still can’t get the bridge mode working against my Minneapolis USI Wireless city network, though. For whatever reason, in bridge mode, there is never a DHCP offer (sorry, said ack above…doesn’t get that far…) that comes back to the inside LAN/WLAN over the bridge from the ISP.

I even did a little test and set the 2211 to connect it’s outside WLAN with an AP I set up locally running a DHCP server, and I was able to complete a DHCP IP assignment from the inside WLAN with the mm2211-ng in bridge mode. I’m not able to exactly replicate the wireless authentication that my city wireless uses (802.1x PEAPv0/EAP-MSCHAPv2) though, so there’s that difference as well as dhcp server implementation differences, but at least it works at some level.

So, either it would seem to be something specific about my ISP’s configuration of their BelAir equipment or dhcp server, or there is something specific to the required wireless auth mode that breaks DHCP forwarding in bridge mode when connected to usi wireless. The bit that seems to point to a problem within the Ruckus implementation though is the fact that it manages to always get an internal ip for itself via DHCP without a problem.

As far as the topic of firmware updates goes, I didn’t get any response to my inquiries for updates. I did notice after I asked, though, that there isn’t actually a way to manually update the firmware anyway, at least not on the unit I have in it’s current. My unit shows a firmware level 4.4.2.xxx, the manual/release notes on the ruckus site are for a 4.3.0.xxx version, so I don’t know if this is a customized/crippled version from my ISP or what or if Ruckus just doesn’t bother to post the updated docs. The manual show that you should be able to specify a method/location for firmware update, but all I’ve got is an auto update button which upon clicking gives me a “update not required” message.

There is also no “Administrator” tab option in the interface, which is alluded to in the manual with “Depending on your access, you may not see some of these options as they are privileged to Administrators”. Don’t know how you get privileged, but it means I can’t troubleshoot with anything there. I’m guessing this is all done to lock the equipment to the isp, in which case I’m glad I rented…

I don’t blame ruckus for not offering more support, because there is obviously a dependency on my ISP. The ISP claims it should be possible but doesn’t official support it, and they refer you to this forum, which gets pretty low traffic. Having updated documentation would be helpful, as would some clarity about firmware status and crippled update screens.

2211-ext bridge mode no-go replied by jojocat @ Mon, 27 Oct 2008 16:06:48 -0000

I have a new ruckus MetroFlex NG model 2211-ext that I’m trying to use in “bridge” mode but I’ve been unsuccessful. After configuring bridge mode rebooting the router, the 2211 still requests and receives a routeable ip address from my providers AP – it’s shown in the management “Status” screen. Although it seems like it should be irrelevant in “bridge” mode, I’ve switched from “DHCP” to “Static” in Configuration→Internet and set a local network address and gateway (it wouldn’t allow it to be empty), and although this seems to stop the 2211 from requesting/receiving an ip from my providers AP, the DHCP requests from my computer connected via either the ethernet port or inside wireless zone is not getting a DHCP ack response (wireshark).

This unit has a very strong signal from my provider (usi wireless minneapolis city isp) and works well in router mode. It is at the latest version of firmware available from the update facility. I have done a factory reset and still have the same problem. The AP equipment from my provider seems to be by vendor “BelAir” judging by a MAC address lookup.

I’m on my trial period with this service and will likely return the unit if bridged mode is not available. I know another person on this network that is successfully using a 2211-dz in bridge mode, but this discontinued model is no longer available from my provider.

Is this a known issue? Is there an updated firmware you can provide that might fix this issue? Any other possible workarounds?

Wish I could provide more logs/diagnostics, but the “administrator” tab in the web gui does not exist as it’s shown in the manual for this model.

Thanks for any help -Jim

Possible to access Ruckus interface when in Bridged mode? replied by boyler99 @ Mon, 27 Oct 2008 01:46:11 -0000

Hello,

I recently switched my Ruckus modem to Bridged mode because I was having trouble with double NAT’ing to some SSL sites. I have the “WAN” port of my Linksys WRT54G wireless router attached to the Ruckus Ethernet interface. My Linksys wireless router is a DHCP server handing out IPs on the 172.16.1.x subnet for LAN computers and wireless computers in our house. Internet access works great for all computers in our house (much better than before when we had double-NAT going on). However, I can’t seem to access the Web interface of the Ruckus modem anymore. Its IP address is 192.168.0.254, and I can access it just fine when I connect my laptop directly to the Ruckus Ethernet port and give my laptop an IP address on the 192.168.0.x subnet. But the Linksys router doesn’t seem to be able to route traffic from the 172.16.1.x subnet to the 192.168.0.x subnet, even if I enter a static route on the Linksys that says the 192.168.0.x subnet is on the “WAN” side of the Linksys (which shouldn’t be necessary since the default route goes out the WAN interface anyway). Is there any way around this, or is this just a fact of life with having the Ruckus in Bridge mode?

Thanks,
Bill

I have two MM2211 broadband gateways, one with the older and simpler HTTP interface, the newer with optional external antenna and the “nicer”, HTTPS GUI. There are two wifi networks nearby (SSID: WifiZone):

WifiZone	00:0E:8E:7C:B5:53	AP	no	11	15/0	0
WifiZone	00:C0:CA:19:FD:B6	AP	no	13	31/0	0

This is what the older MM2211 sees. The best (closer) network would be 00:C0:CA:19:FD:B6. By setting the BSSID mode to “Locked”, it works as it should. However, the newer MM2211 doesn’t see this network, and if set to “Locked” it can’t ever connect!

WifiZone	00:0e:8e:7c:b5:53	AP	no	11	18/0

MauiBob, are you using the 2211 as a Range extender (= Bridge mode) as indicated in an earlier post, or truly as a Dual Zone AP (= Route mode)?

If you are running the 2211 in Bridge mode, then the 2211 will by default receive an IP address from the upstream DHCP server, in your case the Linksys. You can assign a static IP address to the 2211 in Bridge mode (under Configuration > System), which makes managing the device easier. Make sure you assign a static IP address outside of the IP Address Pool of the Linksys.

can't get into configuration replied by bgaddis @ Mon, 18 Aug 2008 15:54:48 -0000

I have a Ruckus 2211 -DZ that was used in a metro location that I am not longer in. I attempted to hook it up to my home linksys wirless router and use it in DZ mode for mu upstairs. Some how it has connceted to my linksys and I can access it if I plug into the ethernet port, but I can not longer get to the configuration at 192.168.1.1. I changed my linksys to 192.168.2.1 to eliminate the conflict but still am unable to get into the Ruckus anymore.

I have reset it, powered it off and on and done everything I can think of to no avail. I have tried multiple laptops and still nothing. Any thoughts?

DNS problem with iPhone replied by RogerG @ Tue, 12 Aug 2008 10:08:39 -0000

I know this is an old topic but I runned into the same problem with my iPhone. Please note that I’m more a user that looks into useability and easy setup to extend my existing wirless at home.

When I switch on the iPhone I have connection for a minute and only a few pages to download. After that I’m getting the message that the server cannot be reached anymore and I do not have any connection to the Internet. I do not have any problems with my PCs or laptops.

So what is the solution with the 2211 so the iPhone can be used at my home and everywhere at any time ?

2211-DZ Disabled replied by schpeider @ Thu, 31 Jul 2008 13:08:26 -0000

I received a 2211-DZ from USI Wireless in Minneapolis. It appears that the “enable Dual Zone” button on the Setup has been hidden. Is there any way I can get it back to set up wireless for my laptop without buying another router?

2211 new version - no manual? replied by Grensgeval @ Sat, 19 Jul 2008 09:55:10 -0000

EDIT: Turns out I am not very sharp today and was looking at the manual for the discontinued models in the MM2211 series. My bad!

original post:

I’ve just bought a MM2211-EXT, which has firmware 4.4.1.0.2 installed.
The software is rather different from the version on which the instructions in the (online) manual are based.

For example, if you want to access the Ruckus’ firmware, setting the pc (win xp) to auto-configure an IP address doesn’t work after the initial installation – you have to manually change the pc’s address to something within the Ruckus’ network – in my case the 2211 has an address of 192.168.30.1
If you let DHCP give out an address, you get connected to the internet-part of the Ruckus (if available).

Many other functions, are not available at all or are set up in a completely different way.

Does a manual exist for this ‘new version’ Metroflex?

Can't Log On With Default Password replied by gravityman @ Thu, 17 Jul 2008 13:36:17 -0000

I am not sure what happened, but after a few more tries resetting to factory defaults, I was able to get in to the interface.

I am still not sure why the password masking dots would disappear. (Nothing to do with being case sensitive)

So far so good.

Hello:

I am trying to log on to the Ruckus web interface using the default password and user name.

When I type in “password” in both IE and Firefox, the masking dots disappear and nothing happens.

I am afraid to reset to factory defaults as the WAN BSSID must be set manually or the WAN will never be picked up,and I’ll never get in to the interface.

Any thoughts appreciated.

Using 2211 as NIC on home net replied by Thunderbeast @ Thu, 10 Jul 2008 17:15:34 -0000

With the demise of Metro-fi in Portland, I would like to use the 2211 to access my 802.11b home network Access Point. I have reached the point where I am passing packets to the radio. All lights are green. The thumb is pointing up. I can not, however make a logical connection to anything other than the admin screens for the MM2211.

The 2211 worked fine using Metro-fi.

The same computer can make connections to my AP as well as my neighbors un-protected one using a standard wireless card. The 2211 gets the same failure whether I try accessing my WEP protected AP or my neighbor’s open one.

Is this something I should be able to do? Is there a “ccokbook” that can help me implement this application?

Once I get network connectivity, can I upgrade the firmware to DZ and use this as a wireless repeater? I think I wiped out the DZ upgrade when I restored the unit to factory settings. I seem to recall that I had a slightly different admin interface when I started.

I have a log file if someone would like to look at it.

Thanks!

Thunderbeast

Update 7/12

I have connected to the world using a different computer that has no domain settings in place. I was able to connect to a neighbor’s wireless AP (according to a tracert command it is served by Comcast). This allowed me to update the firmware to DZ. I still can not ping my router when going through my own WEP encrypted AP.

2211 rewrites URL and other questions replied by bradtem @ Fri, 04 Jul 2008 23:44:49 -0000

I have a Ruckus 2211. It behaves strangely when I give its IP address a name (for example in the hosts file) and try to access it. Once I have defined “ruckus” to be 192.168.30.1, if I go to http://ruckus, it rewrites the URL to be “http://192.168.30.1ruckus/” which of course causes an error.

I can get around this by just going to the box with the raw IP address (ugly) which it then rewrites to https://192.168.30.1/index.html and I can log in.

However, this is not just ugly, because I also want to administer the box remotely via ssh port forwarding. In other words, I forward a port on my local machine to 192.168.30.1:80 via a machine behind the Ruckus which I can ssh to. However, that means my URL in the browser can’t be just the raw IP, it is going to be localhost:forwardport, and after the rewrite, it is unusable. vnc is the only way I have found to get in.

Why this strange rewrite? Can it be fixed or gotten around? Remote administration would also work.

A few other questions: Any hope for other standard router features, such as dynamic DNS and pre-set static DHCP for devices on the local net. (Port forwarding is not very useful if the address of the device you want to forward to can change on you.) Without these I need to have another box such as a linksys behind the Ruckus and that is kinda silly.

Therefore “set scanap svcp” is not implemented. “bss” does not show updated information even “get station” is executed bevore. I am intrested in the whole list, not just the connected station RSSI.
Is there another option to trigger the rescan apart from the inconvenient “leave”?
Thanks
Beat

Using the 4 rj-45 ports on 2111 replied by rvanzijl @ Wed, 11 Jun 2008 09:33:07 -0000

Luis, it depends on which firmware release is running on your 2825. If it is a 4.1 build, then the 4 Ether ports are part of the Management VLAN and do not have a connection to any of the wireless SSIDs. Traffic received on these 4 ports is forwarded out on the WAN (5) port.
